Neru Movie Review: A Malayalam Courtroom Drama with Heart
Jeethu Joseph’s “Neru” is an emotional courtroom drama. From the very beginning, the film focuses on the case at hand, immersing viewers in a narrative that skillfully engages, relates, evokes empathy, and even triggers disdain for the characters. Joseph’s direction ensures that the storytelling remains tight & keep the focus on the central case. The camera work & background music play crucial roles in propelling the narrative forward. While the film lacks typical heroic scenes, the background music still manages to create that illusion.
The 1st half of “Neru” is nearly flawless, seamlessly setting up the intriguing plot. However, the 2nd half, while still strong, introduces some scenes that don’t seamlessly fit into the narrative structure. Despite some twists that may feel either too convenient or random, lacking conviction, the film successfully maintains its grip on the audience throughout its runtime.
Mohanlal, in his role as the lawyer, delivers yet another stellar performance characterized by restraint, calmness, and unwavering confidence. Anaswara Rajan equally shines with a powerful and captivating performance. Siddique is wonderful. We can’t remember the last time we hated a character so much in court room drama. Priyamani supports the cast admirably, and the rest of the supporting ensemble delivers commendable performances.
The interactions between Mohanlal and Anaswara, particularly the last one, stand out as memorable moments in the film. Despite a prolonged second half with some unnecessary elements, “Neru” is a must-watch courtroom drama that leaves a lump in your throat as the credits roll.
