Lijo Jose Pellissery and Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban Review: A Technically Strong Yet Decently Crafted Cinematic Journey

Director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s much-anticipated film, “Malaikottai Vaaliban,” featuring the legendary Mohanlal, is a cinematic spectacle that leaves viewers with mixed emotions. While it boasts exceptional technical brilliance, including outstanding cinematography, a compelling background score, and meticulous production design, the film falters in its screenplay, particularly in the dragged-out first half.

Lijo attempts to blend mass elements with his signature storytelling style, but unfortunately, the mass elements fail to make the impact that was expected. The film’s action sequences are commendable, but an overdose of slow-motion becomes tiresome after a while. Additionally, some song integrations feel abrupt, disrupting the overall flow of the narrative.

The second half, especially the last 20 minutes, is a rollercoaster of chaos and engagement that demands the audience’s undivided attention. Mohanlal delivers yet another solid performance, fully embracing his character, while the supporting cast, including Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Danish Sait, Manoj Moses, Katha Nandi, contribute equally well to the film. However, the portrayal of the foreign king and queen comes off as irritating and caricaturish, slightly denting the overall viewing experience.

Despite being a visually stunning film, “Malaikottai Vaaliban” is held back by a dragged and less cohesive screenplay, making it a decent watch. The climax reveal sets the stage for a promising second part, leaving viewers hopeful for a more compelling narrative in the sequel.
