Mohanlal and Pranav Mohanlal Create History as the Only Father-Son Duo with Consecutive ₹50 Crore Malayalam Blockbusters
The Mohanlal family sets a rare benchmark in Malayalam cinema, becoming the only father-son duo to deliver three consecutive ₹50 crore worldwide grossers each.
The Box Office Legacy Continues
In a remarkable milestone for Malayalam cinema, veteran actor Mohanlal and his son Pranav Mohanlal have achieved something no other duo has, both have delivered three consecutive films that grossed over ₹50 crore worldwide.
The record was confirmed after the stellar global performance of Pranav’s latest film, Diés Iraé, which joined Hridayam and Varshangalukku Shesham in crossing the coveted ₹50 crore mark. On the other hand, Mohanlal’s recent streak, Empuraan, Thudarum, and Hridayapoorvam, reaffirmed his enduring draw across demographics and regions.
Breaking Down the Record
The Malayalam film industry, long known for its storytelling precision, grounded craft, and growing global appeal, has seen an unprecedented surge in large-scale commercial success in recent years.
Mohanlal’s latest run began with Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to Lucifer. Upon release, Empuraan became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time worldwide, grossing an estimated ₹268 crore, a record later surpassed by Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. He followed this with Thudarum, a thriller that broke another barrier by becoming the first film to cross ₹100 crore within Kerala’s domestic market. Rounding out the hat-trick, Hridayapoorvam emerged as a major commercial success, adding over ₹65 crore to his 2025 tally.
What makes the feat even more extraordinary is that all three films were released within the same calendar year, 2025.
Meanwhile, Pranav Mohanlal has built his own box office reputation through a carefully curated set of films that resonate with younger audiences. His breakout success Hridayam (2022), directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, became a generational favourite, grossing ₹55 crore worldwide. He reunited with Vineeth in Varshangalukku Shesham, which also soared past ₹82 crore in global earnings.
His most recent outing, Diés Iraé, directed by Rahul Sadasivan (of Bhoothakalam & Bramayugam fame), has already crossed ₹55 crore worldwide and continues to perform well in theatres.
According to trade estimates, these six titles together have generated over ₹750 crore in global revenue, highlighting not just individual stardom but also the growing box office power of Malayalam content on a global scale.
